The past couple of days saw two news items flashed and these stand out as headers for the media providing it with grist to grind for daysThe past couple of days saw two news items flashed and these stand out as headers for the media providing it with grist to grind for days to come. The coronation of Mrs Sonia Gandhi as the President of the Congress for the fourth consecutive term: It is no small matter and goes to show her complete hold over the party as well as the party’s complete loyalty towards her. A deeper analysis will also prove the Congress’ bankruptcy of leadership-its complete dependence on the Nehru-Gandhi family to survive. This is certainly no good sign of a party which calls itself the oldest political party and yet cannot throw up leaders capable of guiding and leading the party. It is no great credit to the Congress party to abet family and feudalistic/ dynastic regime. Some may think and say that there is nothing wrong. Everything is wrong in fostering such because it negates democracy and the democratic spirit A party which does not have inner democracy cannot give the country a vibrant democracy and nurture a robust democracy- a system of governance which we the people had opted and deliberately choose and on which the Constitution of India is anchored. The second news item-‘Modi is in the dock’ announces the media gleefully: But the media had put Modi in the dock long ago and the CBI was laboring for years to fix guilt on him. Towards this it looked that the CBI has only one State and one person to devote all its energies and its strategies-turning witnesses into approvers, suddenly reopening cases-grilling and recalling persons. Making it amply evident the motive and the goal towards which the CBI was working for. So actually it is no big news that ‘Modi is in the dock’. Now that the former junior Minister for Home Zadaphia had told the Special Investigation Team(SIT) that the chief minister Modi was in complete control of the goings-on in the State after the Godhra train burning on Feb 27th 2002.It is relevant to note that Zadaphia also told the SIT that he had met Mukul Sinha-the advocate of the Jan Sangharsh Manch- who advised him that he could bring down the Modi government single handed! So that’s the motive to bring down the Modi government come what be. It is towards this that the CBI is laboring on. Modi for that matter was put on trial by the media much earlier and also found guilty by it. The Godhra riots is all due to Modi. A cursory view of the whole system of governance will go to prove that there is a hierarchy and it is not always that the topmost person gives the order. Granted that Modi ordered the 59 charred bodies to be brought to Ahmedabad at that point of time is it a crime to view the 59 as martyrs-these were poor devotees whose only crime was that they happened to be kar sevaks .Should the families not get at least that consolation of giving these ‘forgotton 59’ a fitting last journey and last rites? So what was the alternative-to depose of these bodies in secret and allow the families to weep their eyes dry with absolutely no consolation from the government- This led to the riots is the conclusion and hence Modi is guilt of the riots. Result is that Modi must resign-his government must be pulled down. It is towards this that the CBI was huffing and puffing. Let us hypothetically concede this. But then jurisprudence cannot be changed and twisted and justice cannot be one for Modi and another for others. Compare this to the 1984 riots in which at least 3000 minority people was massacred. Was there a government at N.Delhi when the massacre and the rapes were ongoing for two days? We do not need an empowered Go M to dig out records. It is obvious that Rajiv Gandhi was at the helm of affairs and his government simply and callously watched the massacre of a minority community and even went to the extent of justifying it. Should not that government be put in the dock? The Congress which allowed such genocide is guilty and stands indicted. But the media suddenly looses its volume and there is stunning silence. Why? In another heart rending case-13000 die and hundreds are still wheezing and breathless-others are crippled and handicapped. These are the poor victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy-the biggest global industrial disaster. But how coolly we view it-no sense of righteous anger at the way the government went about it. So after some hue and cry the case was reopened. Mind you the Congress which was in power at the Centre and the State has not been named and put in the dock. Arjun Singh breaks his silence and wheels into the Rajya Sabha to tell the House of elders and the nation how helpless he was and now how angry and outraged he is and how he is keen on bringing Warren Andherson to justice! Is that not adding insult to injury? A GoM is appointed (this is the mantra to buy time and to negate justice) to look into the records which it naturally cannot find and no telephone transcript is found to nail Rajiv Gandhi. This is the result of the GoM’s findings-so RG is innocent of all the happenings. Is that not grave mis-governance and a violation of constitutional accountability? The solemn pledge taken at the time of assuming office to safeguard and act without fear or favor is thrown to the winds? So the man at the helm of affairs is soundly and innocently unaware of this global industrial disaster under his regime which took hundreds of lives and left lives broken permanently? Is it not a grave violation to allow a foreigner to safe transit-he was escorted by government officials and given even a government plane to Delhi from where he safely flies out of India as though after a picnic in this country. And poor Rajiv Gandhi is unaware of all this and hence proved innocent by his own party men. What a great travesty of justice. PV.Narasimha Roa becomes the scape goat. He does not belong to a dynastic ruling family and hence it is convenient in making him the culprit. But that does not absolve the Congress-it is part of its baggage. Again such a horrendous crime which shook the world we have to believe that Rajiv Gandhi was unaware of Warren Andherson’s free and safe transit out of the country sounds ridiculous to say the least. The media once again soft pedals the whole issue but for some noise of compensation. And justice in Bhopal gas tragedy still evades it because the Congress and Rajiv Gandhi are involved. It is unthinkable to put Rajiv Gandhi in the dock posthumously. Towards this Justice becomes the casualty. Is there a general Amnesty or infallibility when it comes to the commissions and omissions of the Nehru-Gandhi family? These are not for narration as P.Chidambaram indulged in the Lok Sabha giving us the details of the time and date of the Bhopal gas tragedy sequence of events. But these are of the tragic loss of human lives-disposing them so casually as though it is of no consequence. The main thrust being that Rajiv Gandhi is innocent. Who then was at the helm of affairs? Was RG then a mere puppet-unaware of the happenings of such human catastrophe? Still the Congress cannot absolve itself as a party both at the Centre and the State it was in power. The baggage of the Congress party becomes heavier of lives lost, families broken and victims tales of woes. But they are all poor and are easily dispensable. Yet we are told that the cause of Food Security for the aam admis will be fought religiously by Mrs Sonia Gandhi-that’s her pet scheme. Crumbs for justice…. In both the cases Rajiv Gandhi was innocent asserts the Congress and the UPA2 government-then the same can be applied to Modi too. If there is no probe for those two cases to fix the culprits-where is the need for a CBI probe in the Gujarat/Godhra riots? We do not need a CBI to dig and dig and spent all its time and energies in this State chasing the wild goose. If in both those cases Rajiv Gandhi can be exonerated and proved to be innocent though in power- then why not apply the same yardstick to Modi? He is innocent of the Godhra riots. Things happened beyond his control-It was a natural backlash. He cannot be put in the dock and the CBI cannot be so outrageously used by the Centre to finish off Modi. In the final analysis what is being put forth is that there should not be double standards-two yard sticks and Justice need be upheld irrespective of the party and the person. That is what our Constitution is all about and that is what this country stands for. Truth and Justice must be the hall marks of governance and let it not be felt and seen that injustice is being carried out in the name of Justice. The media has a great responsibility in this regard and must be the watchdog and not a partisan to petty party politics. Dr Mrs Hilda Raja, Vadodara to come. The coronation of Mrs Sonia Gandhi as the President of the Congress for the fourth consecutive term: It is no small matter and goes to show her complete hold over the party as well as the party’s complete loyalty towards her.

Continuing the series on Jammu & Kashmir, today, a little bit about Syed Ali Geelani – in my view, the single biggest road-block to any lasting peace in Kashmir valley.

First, some background. This excerpt is from a news-report dated 2008. I had filed this under “stories that don’t make it as a lead-item”. From Praveen Swami’s An Islamist’s resurrection in Kashmir (emphasis added):

In his pronouncements in recent weeks, the Islamist patriarch himself has left the world in little doubt of his ideological agenda. Speaking to the New Delhi-based journalist Aasha Khosa, Geelani called for the creation of an Islamic nizamiat, or state, in which the “creed of socialism and secularism should not touch our lives and we must be totally governed by the Koran and the Sunnat [precedents from Prophet Muhammad’s life].”

For long, Geelani has argued that Hinduism and Islam are locked in an irreducible civilisational opposition. At an October 26, 2007 rally in Srinagar, he demanded that “the people of the State should, as their religious duty, raise their voice against India’s aggression.”

I doubt if Geelani was mis-understood – or misquoted. The soon-to-be-81 year is the prime force behind the “separatist” movement and has, for years,* successfully walked the fine line between open rebellion and “protests” against the state – almost turning it into an art.

Unsurprisingly, he evokes strong feelings.

On Thursday last week (Sept 2nd), BJP Rajya Sabha MP and senior lawyer Ram Jethmalani called him a mortal enemy of Kashmir. Jethmalani said:

He is an intentional abettor of murder. The state and central government must pick up courage and arrest Geelani and incarcerate him in some jail far away from Srinagar

The next day Farooq Abdullah, responding to Geelani’s challenge to him to repeat the speech he made in Parliament at Lal Chowk in Srinagar. said:

Why should I react to Geelani’s challenge? What’s his locus-standi and who is he?”

Although Geelani is widely believed to have received assistance from ISI and other arms of the Pakistani government over the years, we have been reduced to “taking great satisfaction” in the fact that he has previously described himself as a “senior citizen of India” (in an application form to avail himself of travel concessions).

But who is the real Geelani?

Is he the one who asks his “supporters” to make non-violence their strategy while maintaining that “Jihad” is an option to resolve the dispute in Jammu & Kashmir?

Is he the one who claims to be a Pakistani but gets himself certified as an Indian citizen to avail of benefits?

Is he the one who believes that the future of J&K is with Pakistan, but contests for assembly elections in J&K (and as an ex-MLA, also gets a pension funded by Indian taxpayers)?

Is the real Geelani someone who can be trusted?

Now, instead of thinking hard about these questions, guess what does our Government do? It goes out of its way to court him. A cursory web search reveals that successive governments have been trying since 2001 to have a “dialogue” with Geelani – with no apparent success.

The present one continues down the same path. Instead of saying bluntly “No dialogue as long as you speak the language of Azaadi”, it bends..and keeps on bending. Instead of exploiting his apparently dwindling support base, it continues to lend him credibility by offering to talk to him. Lacking the moral courage to tackle the crisis in Kashmir and lacking the political will to call a spade, a spade, it continues to reach out to him, adding further to his “stature” amongst the stone-pelting “youth” of Kashmir valley…ignoring the fact that the “Azaadi” Geelani claims to be fighting for is not really about freedom in the true sense of the word…It is – as fellow blogger Sandeep said – the freedom to make Kashmir an Islamic state.

Make no mistake. The core issue for Hurriyat is not greater autonomy or development or peace or AFSPA or alleged “human rights” violations. The focal point of Geelani and his followers’ agenda is to somehow trigger the break-up of Jammu & Kashmir and form an Islamic state in the valley.

Let us make sure our people are made aware of this…let us make sure that the powers that be are not lulled into a false sense of security by Geelani’s calls for non-violence. Let us make sure that this man is taken out of any and all equations regarding Jammu & Kashmir. Let us make sure that he is tried for sedition under IPC Section 124A. The more we acknowledge his “hold” on the people, the more strident his stand becomes…the more we hail the “shifts in his stand“, the more intractable the problem becomes.

Sadly, none of this is likely to happen… So we’ll just have to wait – wait for a stroke of good luck – or a slow realisation of sense…or for the tide to turn….which it might just be. From a news-report last week:

Exasperated with repeated shutdowns, curfews and violent deaths, Kashmiris defied hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani’s strike call and went about their business as usual.

I wish the residents of Kashmir valley continue with their “business as usual”. And on the off-chance that Sh Geelani is reading this, my sincere request to you Sir is: “Please realise that Azaadi will always be a non-starter in any attempt at resolving the situation in Jammu & Kashmir. It is time you step aside and give up chasing the dream. Jai Hind, Jai Bharat!”

Comments and thoughts welcome as always.

No rest for China's weary banking reformers. Over the summer, they got Agricultural Bank of China over the finish line, with the state-owned bank pulling off the world's largest IPO. AgBank was the weakest of the Big Four state-owned banks, and with its listing all of the large Chinese banks are now publicly traded. No small accomplishment, given how the banks for decades existed simply as ATMs to direct money from the Finance Ministry to large, state-owned enterprises.

There's still a lot of work for China to do before it has a well-functioning banking system, though. Next up: fixing the banks owned by local governments. These banks are important because traditionally they've been more innovative and have been more willing to lend to smaller, private-sector companies. One sign of what's to come: China Daily reported last week that China Pacific Insurance, the country's third-largest insurer, is going to invest $735 million in one of these local banks, Shanghai Rural Commercial Bank. The paper also reported China's banking regulators are pushing M&A among rural credit cooperatives (RCCs). "RCCs have long been the weakest sector of the country's financial industry," the government paper said. "Financial experts estimate that nonperforming loans of the RCCs have reached 700 billion to 800 billion yuan ($102.74 billion to $117.41 billion)." Look for more news on this in the months ahead.

September 6th, 2010 12:23 AM

1. On Sunday last week, 5 police men were feared killed in an encounter with Maoists, in Patna, Bihar. Later it turned out that 7 policemen were killed, and 4 were taken hostage. The Maoists put forth some wothless demands, and fixed a deadline till Tuesday, failing which they threatened to kill the policemen. The Bihar government did not budge. Sensing that their threat was not being taken seriously, the Naxals killed a cop and threw his body on a road somewhere. And that's when the government started thinking about dealing with the situation. As always, the Naxals were invited for talks, and if they chose to send in a fellow Naxal to represent them, that person was assured safe passage. Now, why would anyone want to reject such an offer? Curiously, the bloody Naxals it! They were ready to release the hostages (at the time of writing this, the hostages still could not be traced), but did not want to talk to the government! Turns out that the police nabbed two persons associated with the killing, and therefore the Naxals developed cold feet! Hoping that atleast this ghastly crime (by the way, another encounter in Chattisgarh, 5 killed) will awaken the govt. to see strength in changing its soft stance on these murderers.

2. Andhra Pradesh Public Service Commission (APPSC) declared that it would conduct Group 1 prelim exam on September 5th. Now, "agitators" from Telangana were dead against this exam being held, without an assurance from the government that 42% of seats would be reserved for Telangana students. They promised "bloodbath" on this day, if the exam were be held. Yep, you read it right - "bloodbath". Ruling party MP's even said on TV that if a bullet was fired, theirs would be the first chest. Approximately 1.9 lakh students have registered for the exam. 10,000 would be selected from this pool. Now, which competitive exam can assure 42% reservation at this stage?! Nevertheless, leaders from this region have made hate speeches one after the other, but thankfully the govt. did not budge. The exam went on peacefully except for in one centre. However, there is one very important drawback that has been sidelined fist fight - the gross incompetency of APPSC. Why does it take 2 years to conduct a preliminary exam? Speculating the date, coaching institutes milk money from aspirants. Why doesn't APPSC release a schedule? Even today, they are not sure when the mains will be conducted. Speaking of mains and interview, please visit this earlier blog post on how those marks are fudged so as to favour favorites. The rot in APPSC is far too deep to be sidelined by such petty issues.
3. So, 3 Pakistani cricketers have been caught resorting to match fixing. Well, technically it is called spot-fixing, for the money they took was for bowling specific no-balls. Now, how long do you think Indian media's fetish should last on this issue? About 5 days later, we are still carrying this news and all news related to or stemming from it, as the major news headlines. Indian media was utterly disappointed that this sting operation was carried out by a UK based news channel. Now, they can't claim exclusive rights for the same. So they do the next best thing - pass on their "discussions" and "debates" over the issue as something unique and hard hitting ! While the three players have been banned, the epitome of fixers, Mr. Azharuddin, who is now a honourable MP from Congress, has sermoned us with this gem "Guilty of fixing should be punished" ! That's all, your honour!

I had read the story of Daniel Everette’s experience among the Piraha tribe years ago in an article by him. This morning, Hemley Gonzalez’s tweet about Everette, brought that back to mind. I watched the short BBC 4 video that Hemley linked to (embedded below.) I urge you to take the 10 minutes to watch it. It is deeply moving. (On a personal note, I am off to Washington DC for a few days. Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.)
